TO AVOID DISAPPOINTMENT, FOCUS ON WHAT YOU CAN CONTROL.
TO AVOID DISAPPOINTMENT, FOCUS ON WHAT YOU CAN CONTROL.
Disappointment is something we all want to avoid in life. Often, high expectations regarding things outside our control lead to disappointment. It’s essential to recognize that humans are dynamic beings, each with different thoughts and desires. Expecting others to align with your wants can inevitably lead to disappointment.
To mitigate disappointment, concentrate on what you can control. While it may be challenging to manage the actions or thoughts of others—such as co-workers or family members—you can control your actions and reactions. You cannot dictate what others say or do, but you hold the power to avoid disappointing yourself. This starts with focusing on personal growth and striving to be the best version of yourself. If others need your assistance, you can be there to help, but make it a priority to focus on your tasks and objectives.
If you learn to control yourself, understanding how to influence others becomes easier. However, high expectations regarding controlling others can set you up for disappointment. When relying on a third party to accomplish tasks, remember that you can only control certain aspects, which can lead to potential disappointment.
Ultimately, our greatest disappointments often stem not from things but from human relationships. Although we may seek gifts or assistance from others, our true trust should rest in a higher power. When I recognized that my disappointment often arose from expectations of things I couldn’t control, I shifted my perspective to focus on what I could manage. Psalm 22:5 states, "They cried to you and were saved; in you, they trusted and were not disappointed."
In God, we can place our complete trust and experience no disappointment. We are often at the mercy of those who control the things we desire or dislike. Our desires should align with what God intends for us, rather than what others dictate. Avoid disappointment by letting others handle their responsibilities while you focus on what you can control and allow God to guide you.
To prevent disappointment, I concentrate on the areas I can influence: my business, my assignments, my writing, my actions, my mindset, my beliefs, and the impact of my work. I believe that if my writing can influence my life, it can do the same for others.
In conclusion, when you focus solely on what you can control, it enables you to maintain a positive attitude and engage in meaningful conversations. As a writer, I don’t seek validation from social media likes, nor do I expect everyone to appreciate my work. I cannot control others' opinions, so I aim to avoid disappointment by directing my attention to what I can manage. I encourage you to try focusing on your controllable aspects for one week—thank me later for the outcome. God bless you.
Hope this brings clarity and Insight.
