HOW TO INVEST IN A RELATIONSHIP

**HOW TO INVEST IN A RELATIONSHIP**

Relationships are essential and should be taken seriously. Investing in a relationship is akin to investing in anything valuable; it requires time, effort, and intentionality. In an article I wrote in 2023 titled "Defining Every Relationship," I stated, "Every relationship is built on communication that connects two people. What connects you is the value that keeps the relationship relevant."
To invest in any relationship, it’s important to understand what connects you. Some relationships are formed for business, some are romantic, and others are rooted in ministry. As I mentioned earlier, a relationship is built on communication and understanding. The nature of your communication—especially when investing in a relationship—depends on what binds you together. This means you must define the relationship before investing in it. Your definition will determine the level of investment you make.

For those looking to understand how to invest in a relationship after defining it, here are four tips:

1. **Give Time and Attention to the Relationship**: Quality time is crucial. Prioritize undistracted moments together. Be present—listen actively, engage deeply, and show you care. As mentioned, the time you spend together should focus on what connects you. Use this time to communicate about your shared values and goals.

2. **Establish Shared Goals and Vision**: Align on what you both want out of life, whether in friendships, business, or romantic relationships. Invest in mutual dreams and work towards them together. Understanding the direction each of you is headed is vital for fostering an effective relationship. Ask about each other’s visions and goals, and invest sincerely in them.

3. **Love Unconditionally**: Love is fundamental in any relationship you wish to invest in; both parties must demonstrate love. While I chose not to place love as the number one priority, unconditional love is essential. 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 defines love beautifully: "Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others; it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, and it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres." Therefore, embody these qualities of love in your relationship.

4. **Serve One Another**: Investing in serving one another does not make you a slave; it demonstrates your commitment to helping each other achieve what defines your relationship. We value those who are dedicated to our goals and visions, and you cannot be committed to one another without service. Invest in serving each other to cultivate an effective relationship. As Galatians 5:13 reminds us: "You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love."

In conclusion, your investment in a relationship determines its effectiveness. Remember to define the type of relationship first; your definition will guide the nature of your investment.

God bless you.
