Knowing God Yourself
You need to understand this: knowing God is different from attending a church program. Who God is, is not defined by religion or activities. Knowing God is a personal journey a walk where you discover Him, and in discovering Him, you truly discover yourself.
Your life’s journey is predestined by God. He knows why He created you, the potentials He placed inside you, and the destiny He designed for you. That’s why, when it comes to purpose, it’s not enough to simply have knowledge about God; you must know Him personally.
“Knowing yourself, is in knowing God.”
Since God made you, only He fully knows what’s inside you, the abilities, gifts, and assignments He placed within you. Just like a product is best understood by its manufacturer, only your Creator truly knows the function He designed you to fulfill. If you desire to discover your purpose, your first responsibility is to know Him deeply.
What Does It Mean to Know God?
John 17:3 (GNB): “And eternal life means to know you, the only true God, and to know Jesus Christ, whom you sent.”
Eternal life is not just living forever; it’s having the life of God within you, a life of fellowship and intimacy with the Father and His Son, Jesus Christ.
To know God means:
To be with Him.
To look like Him.
To enjoy His presence and walk in fellowship with Him.
Knowing God is fellowship. And without deep fellowship, man cannot truly understand the destiny God designed for him.
Think about this:
“If I am not your father, you can’t claim my inheritance. My inheritance belongs to my children.”
Until you become a child of God, you cannot access the inheritance of God. If your Father is far away from you, you cannot know His mind or His plans. But the closer you are to Him, the more you understand:
His purpose for your life.
His direction for your journey.
His instructions for each season.
Draw closer to God—because intimacy unlocks destiny.
Draw Closer to God
James 4:8 (GNB) “Come near to God, and He will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners! Purify your hearts, you hypocrites!”
When we need something important from our earthly fathers, we seek to gain their attention so we can express our hearts to them. In the same way, drawing closer to God daily is a personal responsibility for anyone who desires to discover their life’s purpose.
Your purpose is not random, it's a divine assignment entrusted to you by God alone. You cannot understand or fulfill it outside of Him. You must:
Love God
Know God
Serve God
Walk with God
That’s how He reveals your assignment on earth.
Look at Adam in the Garden of Eden: God placed him there to cultivate and guard it, and He gave him specific work to do. Adam had fellowship with God, and from that fellowship came his assignment.
Understand this:
“You cannot draw closer to God and remain purposeless.”
The work He gives you is called your purpose, your assignment, your mandate. The closer you are to God, the clearer you understand each phase of your purpose.
Don’t just come close to discover your purpose and then walk away; stay close so that you can gain continuous understanding as He leads you step by step.
If you’ve not yet received clarity about your assignment, focus on your walk with God, not just your work for God. For a man to discover his purpose, he must first draw closer to God and remain in constant fellowship with Him.
Your walk with God is the pathway to discovering your purpose. Draw near, stay near, and let Him reveal the reason you were created.
